How to Become an NBCH Coalition Member

National Business Coalition on Health members and employers have joined together to collectively purchase health care, proactively challenge high costs and the inefficient delivery of health care, and share information on quality — ensuring that their coalitions are on the leading edge of market-based reform.

Community Health Reform is based on a clear set of principles:

  • Value-based health care purchasing — obtaining the highest quality care at the most reasonable cost;

  • Measuring the comparative quality and efficiency of hospitals, physicians, and health plans in the community to identify the best value;

  • Creating incentives to provide higher-value care through integrated delivery systems and continuous quality improvement; and

  • Improving the overall health of the community.

Acting on these principles, coalitions and their member employers are working with providers to improve health care delivery systems from Maine to California. Purchasing value means rewarding quality and cost-effectiveness in the delivery of health care services — not just seeking the lowest price. Coalitions are improving quality by holding providers accountable for their performance through the development of information systems to collect data, monitor health care outcomes, and measure value.

Membership is limited to state, local and regional business coalitions, which are working to establish a value-based health care delivery system through quality measurement and collective purchasing, and to improve the health of both the community and their employees.

What are the eligibility requirements for membership?

  • Member coalitions must be organized as not-for-profit corporations and are exempt from federal income taxation.

  • A majority of each member coalition's decision-making body must be comprised of health care purchasers who are not providers of health care services.
    • Application for membership shall be made in writing to the NBCH President and approved by a majority of the NBCH Board of Governors.

    • Applicants must be committed to the promotion of NBCH's objectives.
