Return to Physician Performance Measurement & Reporting Introduction > Case Studies

UnitedHealthcare Premium® Designation Program

UnitedHealthcare launched the UnitedHealth Premium® Physician Designation program in 2005 to improve quality and increase transparency by providing performance information about both primary care and specialty physicians. By 2010, the program expanded to evaluate physician performance across 22 clinical areas.

Physician performance is evaluated using quality and cost efficiency measures with a star rating system. Quality performance is evaluated first, followed by performance efficiency. Physicians who meet the quality measures receive one star on the UnitedHealthcare website and reports, and physicians who meet both quality and cost efficiency measures receive two stars.

The UnitedHealth Premium® Designation program enables consumers to make informed health care decisions based on value—using quality and cost efficiency factors. Employers can use the reported information to develop purchasing strategies through a series of utilization and savings opportunity reports provided by UnitedHealthcare.
